Hacienda Chichen Resort & Yaxkin Spa Water Resources

"Land and water management in the Yucatan Peninsula is fragmented, and is often ineffective in the face of pressure to develop the tourism and recreational industry. Researchers conclude that without integrated approaches to protecting and managing the aquifer, ”the tourism-based economy of Yucatan” will not be sustainable over the medium to long term.”

United Nations University article in “Health & Water”

Because we at Hacienda Chichen Resorts are aware of this reality, all possible measurements have been taken to conserve and protect our natural fresh water supply and aquatic ecosystem. Hacienda Chichen maintains a strict protocol to protect the hotel’s underground fresh water wells from pollutants and other damaging agents.  We monitor our water sources' purity levels and perform in depth pluming system check-ups to reduce water waste.  A water filter has been installed to ensure in-house pure water supply to all areas, but we understand guests feel safer consuming bottled water and do serve it if requested, at a charge.

We recycle all our waste water biologically and through man-made wetlands. The gray water (laundry, showers and wash basin) go through filter traps and bio-digestible tanks before they are used as underground irrigation in our gardens. The black waters go into bacteria biodegrading tanks, an organic man-made wetlands as part of our septic water-purification and recycling system. The sediments and organic processed waste become fertilizers for our gardens and compost pile. The kitchen offers guests great cuisine; its gray water processed through grease traps and filters with sand, gravel, stone and bacteria - gray water, once filtered, is used in our natural rejoyadas (natural sink holes with unique micro-environments) and jungle habitat.

“Oh, how I love your pool and place. Lucky guests!”

Yucatan’s fresh water supply is primarily found underground and cenotes; the damage caused by toxic waste, oils, and improper septic practices has increased in recent years within this region.  According to many scientific studies and the United Nations, shortage of clean water is one of the most serious challenges facing the world this millennium. Hacienda Chichen owners and administration have taken great care to protect the hotel’s underground fresh water well reserves from pollutants and other damaging agents.  We monitor our water sources purity levels and continually improve our pluming system to reduce water waste.
